Upper School Fine Arts

Music

Students in Junior High and High School music continue to hone their skills of musical literacy. They not only learn to sight-read at a high level, but they practice dictation and basic composition skills as well. Each member of Junior High and Senior High choir is an active learner, responsible for teaching himself/herself the rhythms and melodies of each song. With extra opportunities such as Junior High Stage Band, Pep Band, Madrigals, and Musicals, students put these skills to valuable use. By the time a student arrives at graduation, he/she will be fluent in the language of music.

Art

The visual art experience at CP is unlike that of most public or private secondary schools.  Preparation for the upper school program begins in the lower grades with a program that is designed to prepare students by introducing them to both the language and basic skills needed be successful in the upper grades.  The focus of the upper school program begins with drawing in the 7th and 8th grade followed by two years of design study in 9th and 10th and then capped off with a semester of art history in the 11th.  The program, grades 7-11 builds on itself.  The knowledge and skills learned in the 7th are needed in the 11th.

All students are required to take visual art.  We recognize visual art as a language and like any language it requires continuous study.  Imagine taking English sporadically or only offering it to the few students who are really interested in it.

I have directed the high school dramas for the past ten years. I choose plays that represent the greatest works of theatre from the great dramatists of the Western world; everything from Shakespeare to Thorton Wilder. These plays give students the opportunity to learn from the inside how to communicate these characters and works using time-tested acting techniques that bring the plays to life. I consider it a great privilege to work with young men and women to develop their skils as an outworking of Cair Paravel’s commitment to excellence in Rhetoric and performance.
