Kindergarten Round-up: March 2, 2012 - 9:00 a.m.

Kindergarten is an adventure of inspired learning, expanding faith and new friendships.  We know that by sending your child to school that you are enlisting your most precious gift from God under our care. Cair Paravel Latin School looks at this gift as an extension of your parenting, values system and faith. We want to make the transition into school as comfortable and meaningful as we can. This applies to both students and parents.

Is my child ready?

The goal of kindergarten is to have a successful, positive transition into school. This transition happens best when the child is truly ready. All children are different and at times it is difficult to know how a child will do in class until he/she is in kindergarten. It is our aim to help with this process, but as the parent, no one knows them better than you. Please consider the following steps in assessing your child's readiness.

1.  Children must turn five on or before September 1 of the year they enroll for kindergarten.  We encourage parents to also be mindful of birth order and look at the individual child. You might have one child at age 5 that was developmentally ready and another that would benefit from another year of growing first. Giving them the gift of time may be something they benefit from for the next 12 years of school.

2. Consider your child's maturity level. This includes both their personal and social development. Does your child follow directions from adults? Do they interact socially without physical incidents like hitting or biting? Can they sit and listen to the reading of a book for 5 minutes? Can your child use art supplies like crayons and scissors, tie their shoes, help put away toys, etc.? Those that have mastered some or all of these skills may be better equipped for the school setting.

3. Visit with his/her preschool teacher, and if not applicable, your family's pediatrician. They will have a good sense of his/her development in comparison with other children of the same age.

4. Visit a kindergarten class. By standing in the back of the room for a few minutes, does the activity and behavior that you observe seem to be similar to that of your child?

Ready for Round-up!

Kindergarten Round-up is the perfect opportunity for prospective families to tour the building, hear about the school, meet the Kindergarten teachers, and learn more about the curriculum and mission of CPLS. At this two-hour open house, you will get to know the school and staff while your child visits classrooms, meets the teachers, does a craft and has some fun in the gymnasium with CPLS staff and faculty.

At the end of the Round-up, those students who have submitted their Family and Student applications (found below) and the non-refundable $100 application fee, may sign up for a 20-minute Kindergarten Readiness appointment. This dedicated time between incoming Kindergarteners and CPLS teachers and administration helps foster the relationship between student and teacher, while also allowing the teacher to identify the child's maturation.

We understand that the process of sending a child "off" to school is a difficult one. We will do our best to bridge the gap between child and parent.
