Literature

One of the hallmarks of the curriculum of Cair Paravel-Latin School is a strong emphasis on reading the classics of literature. A classic is a work of literature, which has been read and enjoyed by at least three generations and has withstood the test of time.

READING REQUIREMENTS:

Grade Level: Requirement:
First & Second Grade: Read and record the titles of forty books per year.
Third through Sixth Grades:

Each student must read three biographies each year. These books count towards the required literature points.

Each student must accumulate a number of literature points equal to ten times their grade level per year to receive a grade of "C" over the course of the school year from the CPLS approved literature list. Literature grades are calculated quarterly and excess points may be carried over to the next quarter. An additional 20% of literature points are required to earn a "B" and 40% to earn an "A". (See calculating Literature points.)

Biographies: Three biographies are required. Allow 1 literature point for every 15,000 words.
Listed Books:

CPLS has developed a list of recommended literature to encourage students to read the classics. This list is available in the school handbook.
